Freya has the islands all sewn up

Freya Mabel Makes Tapestry

I'm Freya, owner of Freya Mabel Makes and I grew up in Perth. Which is also known as the heart of Scotland and the gateway to exploring the North, which my parents loved to do. In turn they have nurtured a love for Scotland within both me and my sister. We have been fortunate enough to spend many family holidays camping and cycling around the Highlands and Islands, in all weathers.

A passion for her art

After studying Fashion Technology at Heriot Watt University in Galashiels, I wanted to develop my sewing further. However, having been taught the importance of sustainability I knew I wanted to move away from fashion and clothing.

I began developing my Scottish landscape tapestries, and Freya Mabel Makes was born. It is a joy to combine my passion for sewing with my love for Scotland.

The precious memories the islands hold

The Scottish islands are very dear to me, as they remind me of the adventures we had as a family with my late father. They are also a perfect respite from big city life, with vast white beaches, and crystal blue sea. Learning how the islands work and meeting the communities is also what draws me to them.

A personal favourite island is Coll, one of the Inner Hebrides. The stunning beaches are worth climbing over the sand dunes for and it's quiet enough to cycle around. The small village of Arinagour brings the whole isle together, with a cafe, hotel, bar and shop.

Freya as a young girl

Last month, whilst on Coll for the Half Marathon weekend, my now fiancé proposed to me. We both love the islands and are looking forward to doing a tour of the Outer Hebrides for our honeymoon.
