Blessed with plenty of sun and the warm gulf stream, Tiree has been nicknamed 'The Hawaii of the North'. Its pristine white sand beaches also lend the island the illusion of a tropical paradise in the summer months. It’s the wind that has helped to bring life to the island however, making Tiree a mecca for windsurfers. Every year the island hosts the Tiree Wave Classic.
That may be the longest running professional windsurfing event in the world, but Tiree is also perfect for families taking their first splash into learning to surf. On dry land, there are loads of opportunities for family cycling too. The main village of Scarinish has shops and facilities, as well as An Iodhlann, an interesting museum charting the island’s history.
Ten miles out to see stands Skerryvore, Scotland’s tallest lighthouse. Learn the story of its remarkable construction and working life at the Skerryvore Lighthouse Museum, safely on dry land at Hynish on the South of the island. Featuring detailed exhibitions and a chance to see the original accommodation offered to the lighthouse keepers, this is a fascinating glimpse into one of the most eccentric of occupations.
An Turas is Gaelic for ‘A Journey’, and this modern art installation provides just that. Located beside the ferry terminal neat Scarinish, it functions as a shelter for those awaiting transit but is so much more than just a waiting room. A long corridor obscures your vision before leading to an opening that frames the view, presenting the vibrant vista of the stunning Gott Bay. A critically acclaimed piece of functional social art.
