Eigg: Explore a Unique Island

As you set sail from Mallaig on your journey to the Small Isles, you can’t miss Eigg’s distinctive outline on the horizon. Perfectly complimenting its craggy neighbour Rùm, Eigg lies long and flat against the sea, with its famous hill, An Sgurr, pointing proudly from the end.

Eigg is one of the smallest Scottish islands, part of a grouping known as the ‘Small Isles’ just south of Skye. Despite its smaller size, it is one of the most populated of the Small Isles, with 105 residents. The population reportedly grew following the community’s purchase of the island in 1997, which saw many young people move to the island, bringing a range of business that make Eigg a must visit.

Please note: Eigg does not allow visitors to bring their car – only residents, contractors or Blue Badge holders. If you’d like to apply for a permit to your car over, you can apply by contacting Highland Council.

Community owned green powered

Eigg is a pioneer of sustainability; it doesn’t use the mainland supply of electricity, relying instead on their community owned and managed electricity company, Eigg Electric. Eigg Electric uses the water, sun and wind of their local environment to power all island homes and businesses. Eigg’s green journey is inspiring – discover more on sustainable initiatives.

Eigg is also committed to preserving its wonderful wildlife, in collaboration with Scottish Wildlife Trust. If you’re interested in seeing some of the local birds, sealife and plantlife, the Trust hold regular wildlife walks, guided by a ranger, throughout the summer season. You can choose from either the Wildlife Walk – a longer walk off the beaten path – or the Seashore Walk – a shorter stroll around the bay. The walks are free and don’t require booking, find out more about wildlife walks.

Outdoor adventures

If you’re looking for a slightly more challenging walk with views of a longer range, don’t miss An Sgurr, Eigg’s highest point found on the south of the island. The hike can take up to four hours, but the views of Eigg’s fellow Small Isles, Skye, the mainland and even the Outer Hebrides are more than worth it.

Guided walks are available from The Isle of Eigg Guiding Company, with founders Jon and Kat leading the way as they explain Eigg’s geology, plantlife, local legends and more. The Eigg Guiding Co. also offer paddleboard tours of the island, as well as a snorkel tour of the bays.

Or, if you fancy exploring by yourself, e-bikes, bikes and kayaks are available for hire from Eigg Adventures. Whether you’d like to stick to the single-track road that serves the island, or would like to explore off road, Owain at Eigg Adventures has a bike suited for you. He will even talk you through the map of Eigg to get you started on your adventure!

Food and drink

Eigg is home to some fantastic spots for food and drink too. Pick up something for a picnic at the Isle of Eigg Shop, or homebaking at Rest and be Thankful. If you’re looking for a sit-down meal, the Galmisdale Bay Café serves wonderful homecooked food which you can enjoy sitting either inside or outside to take in the beautiful scenery, including a view of Ardnamurchan from across the sea.

Or, if you are on the other side of the island, in the north, try the Lageorna Guest House, a 4* restaurant with rooms. They offer a three-course set menu using local produce from the Small Isles.

Finally, the Isle of Eigg Brewery is a must-visit for all beer lovers. They offer tastings both inside and outside, as well as the opportunity to brew your own batch!
