Uig Harbour Closure 10 October 2022 - 27 March 2023

Following Highland Council's announcement regarding the closure of Uig Harbour, CalMac has arranged community consultations so that options about how to maintain services throughout the closure can be discussed. These sessions are vital in ensuring island views are considered within alternative service arrangements. In the meantime, we've prepared the following to help answer any questions you may have:

Why am I not able to buy a ticket on Lochboisdale - Mallaig or Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy services from 10 October - 23 October 2022?

Bookings are now open for this period for Lochboisdale - Mallaig. Bookings remain closed for Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy due to the Highland Council closing Uig Harbour for essential upgrades from 10 October 2022 - 27 March 2023. The closure falls within the last two weeks of the summer timetable period therefore bookings for this two week period have been temporarily suspended until alternative ferry services options for Skye Triangle routes have been finalised.

Why are bookings on the Mallaig - Lochboisdale service affected when the port closure is at Uig?

Bookings on the Mallaig - Lochboisdale service are now open for bookings for the period 10 October - 23 October 2022.

I am booked on a Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy sailing between 10 - 23 October 2022, what will happen with my booking?

Please be assured that we still have your booking. We will contact our customers who have made bookings and who are affected to provide further information and to help make arrangements once alternative ferry services for Skye Triangle routes are finalised.

Why is Uig Harbour closing?

The Highland Council has confirmed the harbour is closing to allow them to replace life expired infrastructure and improve the capacity, reliability and resilience at Uig.

You can visit the Highland Council Project website to find more information on the project.

What infrastructure works will be carried out at Uig Harbour?

The Highland Council is responsible for delivering the infrastructure works and you can find out more about the details on the  Highland Council Project website .

What service continuity plans will be implemented during this period?

Service continuity plans are currently being finalised and will be presented to the community in a second round of consultations in Uist, Skye and Harris at the following dates/times and locations:

  • Benbecula, Balivanich Hall: 5 April 2022 at 5.30-8pm

  • Uig Village Hall: 6 April 2022 at 5.30-8pm

  • Tarbert Community Centre: 7 April 2022 5.30-8pm

These sessions are vital in ensuring island views are considered within alternative service arrangements. We encourage all representatives of the community to attend and ensure their views are presented.

Will fares stay the same?

This is under discussion with Transport Scotland and we will advise communities in due course.

Will commercial bookings be available on the replacement services?

Yes. Commercial bookings will be available on replacement services for the duration of the closure.

What input can customers have on these timetables?

CalMac will be hosting community consultations in Benbecula, Tarbert and Uig. This will allow us to gather input to support the development of proposed timetables and service continuity plans which will be in place during the closure of Uig Harbour.  Consultations will be held at the following dates/times and locations:

  • Benbecula, Balivanich Hall: 5 April 2022 at 5.30-8pm

  • Uig Village Hall: 6 April 2022 at 5.30-8pm

  • Tarbert Community Centre: 7 April 2022 5.30-8pm

These sessions are vital in ensuring island views are considered within alternative service arrangements. We encourage all representatives of the community to attend and ensure their views are presented.

Why are you hosting a session in Benbecula and not Lochmaddy?

We have decided to host a consultation meeting in Benbecula instead of Lochmaddy as it's centrally located in Uist and thus, provides a greater opportunity for all communities in Uist impacted by the closure of Uig Harbour to attend the meeting and provide their feedback on the development of proposed timetables.

Will compensation be available to businesses financially impacted by the closure?

Transport Scotland has confirmed they will not reimburse any expenses incurred by passengers or for loss of earnings as a result of the closure.

What will the vessel deployment be on the route once vessel 802 is delivered?

Our current intention is for vessel 802 to be deployed on the Skye Triangle once delivered.

Is the LNG component of the project still going ahead?

CalMac is currently working with Transport Scotland to procure an LNG supply for MV Glen Sannox and vessel 802.
