What information do I need to be aware of prior to taking a caravan, motorhome, campervan, or boat on a trailer onto our ferries?
Before boarding one of our vessels with a caravan, campervan, motorhome, or boat on a trailer, we need you to make sure you carry out the following actions. These are very important, and must be carried out in accordance with Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) regulations.
-
All dangerous goods - including flammable substances such as petrol (more than 5 litres), LPG and compressed air cylinders must be declared at least 24 hours in advance of travel by contacting your port of departure. They must also be carried in accordance with MCA regulations.
-
Please declare these goods and gas-powered appliances (i.e. gas powered fridges) to port staff / vessel crew when you arrive at the port for your crossing.
-
Prior to boarding the vessel, make sure any gas supply is shut off at the cylinders and no gas-powered appliances are in use during the voyage (e.g., gas-powered fridge).
-
Please ensure that gas cylinders are secured against the movement of the ship and stored away from sources of ignition and heat.
-
When disembarking the vessel with your vehicle, caravan or boat on a trailer, please take extra care - particularly at low tide.
CalMac Ferries reserve the right to inspect and/or refuse any vehicle presented for shipment if these regulations are not complied with.

Campervans/Motorhomes/Caravans, Outer Hebrides, Mull and Tiree:
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) request that visitors in caravans, motorhomes and campervans stay in official campsites or designated overnight spots. Plan your trip carefully and stay only in these designated areas. Please follow the P.L.A.C.E visitor code to help to keep the Outer Hebrides special.
At the request of Argyll & Bute Council we have been asked to advise customers that they are required to secure a pitch for their vehicle on Mull and Tiree in advance of travel. Please ensure you have agreed overnight provision. Visit the Tiree Community Development Trust for details about campsites and croft pitches. Wild camping is not permitted on Tiree with any vehicle.
