Meet the Lewis Chessmen at Lews Castle
Lews Castle overlooks Stornoway Harbour - and is an impressive building built in the mid 1800s. It's served as a hospital during WW2, a college, a school and now it's a wonderful destination in its own right. Explore the extensive grounds - perhaps even by Segway, rest and restore your energy inside the castle café with a local delicacy before heading to the castle museum - Museum nan Eilean. Here you will meet the Lewis Chessmen - six pieces of a 900 year old chess set that have recently been returned to Lewis, the island of their discovery.
