CalMac issues travel warning

Although Hurricane Ophelia has now been downgraded, winds in excess of 70mph can be expected across the west coast of Scotland in the next few hours. It is expected ferry services may be severely disrupted.

'Gale-force winds are expected to hit our operating area over the course of today and sailings are likely to be affected,' said CalMac's Head of Service Delivery (north) Robert Morrison.

'We appreciate the lifeline nature of our services and will operate when and where it is safe to do so. This may involve taking advantage of good weather windows so the timetable may well change.

'We would urge passengers who need to travel to regularly check the status of their sailing on the website or through our service status app before they set off on their journey.'
